IPv6 WHOIS and RDAP explained

WHOIS and RDAP records describe how an IPv6 network is registered and allocated. They are useful for network operations, abuse investigation, and routing research, but they do not reveal the location or identity of an individual user.

WHOIS is familiar; RDAP is structured

WHOIS is the traditional text-based service for internet number registration data. RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol, provides the same general kind of information in a structured format with standardized links and fields.

This tool retrieves and stores a registry response through RDAP. The result is presented as a WHOIS lookup because that is the common task name, while the raw cached response retains the structured registry data for technical inspection.

Allocation context

What an IPv6 registry record can show

  • The IPv6 range or CIDR block that includes the queried address.
  • The regional registry or allocation authority that returned the response.
  • Published organization, status, events, contacts, and technical links.

How to read it

Allocation is not always end-user ownership

An address may be registered to an ISP, cloud provider, enterprise, or reseller. The record commonly covers a much larger network block than one device. Treat the organization field as allocation context, not proof that a particular person or machine uses the address.

Practical limits

Use registry data carefully

Registry records can be incomplete, redacted, delegated, or updated after an allocation changes. They are not an IP geolocation service and should not be used to infer a street address, precise physical location, or a person behind an IP address.

For reproducible direct URLs, FindIPv6 only displays WHOIS results already stored in its cache. Opening an unknown result URL returns a 404 and never sends a new upstream registry request; submit the address through the lookup form when you want to request a record.
